What Are Same Day Dental Implants?

Traditionally, getting dental implants to replace your missing teeth was a complicated process. From extracting the damaged teeth to placing the crown on the implant could take nearly a year!

Today, though, the field of dentistry offers a type of technology called the same day dental implant. In one visit, any necessary extractions are performed, and you walk out of the office with your new teeth that very day!

If you’ve researched traditional implants in the past, you might ask, “How can dental implants be done in one day?” The answer is in the state-of-the-art equipment and specialized training offered at Cedar Grove Dental.

Not all dentists can provide their patients with this beneficial service. But our staff is highly trained and knowledgeable. We have the expertise and the equipment to get you a beautiful smile with implants with one day dental implants.

Missing and unsightly teeth can cause people to feel insecure. They hide their smile and shy away from in-person communication with others. This eventually leads to problems like depression and other mental health issues.

But when you don’t have all your healthy teeth, it can also turn into some physical complications, too.

You don’t have to worry about any of those issues if you opt for implants. Traditional and same day varieties both give you back your beautiful smile!

But if you can get full dental implants in one day instead of months, wouldn’t that be amazing? It’s possible, and to learn more about how you can reap the benefits of same day implants, read on!

The Basics of Dental Implants

To understand how the dentist can do implants in a day, you need to first know the basics of what goes on in an implant procedure. The process of receiving dental implants consists of three parts: the extraction, implant placement, and crown. Usually, each part is its own separate procedure. The tooth is removed, then the site has to heal. The implant is then placed, and it has to fuse to the jaw bone (called osseointegration).

Only after those processes complete, which can take weeks or months, is the final piece finished. Your permanent implant replaces the temporary ones you’ve had while your surgeries were healing.

How Same Day Denture Implants are Different

The denture implants in one day procedure, on the other hand, does all of this in one visit. The tooth extraction and implant are done on the same day. This is possible with immediate dental implants that cover the gap where your tooth was pulled. Because both procedures are completed on the same day, your body has less of a recovery period to go through.

The crowns (new teeth) are also placed on that visit. If you have custom-made crowns, you may have to come back to have those adhered to the implant. Meanwhile, temporary teeth will be attached, so when you leave the office, you’ll have a perfect smile to take with you.

One Day Dental Implants vs. Traditional Implants

In order to qualify for either type of implant, you have to have enough healthy jawbone in your mouth to handle the procedure. If you don’t, it might be possible to do a bone graft that gives you the bone density you need for implant placements.

There are other similarities and differences between one day and traditional implants, too, like:

  • Both implants are made from titanium alloy, a material that is used in many surgeries. Titanium has been proven to be accepted by most people’s bodies, making the osseointegration process much easier.
  • Traditional implants take more time to complete because of the separate healing processes. Same day implants have less recovery time, but usually have more swelling and discomfort.

Since you’re having three procedures at one time, it’s to be expected. However, if you aren’t in well enough physical shape to handle this, you might prefer the traditional route.

  • There is a risk of bone loss with both types of implants. Statistics show the risk is minimally greater with one day implants.
  • Same day dental implants cost, on average, around the same as traditional implants. The labor involved in the procedure is more intensive, but you have less time overall in the office.
  • Both same day and traditional implants can last up to twenty years, depending on how you take care of them. However, if you do have bone loss, your implants may have to be adjusted over time.

If one day dental implants sound amazing, the next step is to find out if you’re a candidate for this procedure.

Are Same Day Implants Right For You?

Any time you’re having a surgical procedure, there’s a medical evaluation involved first. If you are interested in having same day dental implants, schedule a consultation at Cedar Grove Dental.

The dentist will go over your medical history and evaluate your current oral health. You’ll have an x-ray performed to what the state of your jaw bone is. From there, you’ll learn if you’re a candidate for this procedure, or if something else might be better for you.

In general, if you’re in good health and a non-smoker (or willing to quit before the procedure), you’re probably going to be able to benefit. But there are some things that could keep you from safely having the procedure, including:

  • Bad oral hygiene habits
  • Signs of dental issues such as advanced gum disease or bruxism (teeth grinding)
  • Medical diagnoses of an autoimmune or chronic disease (depending on the diagnosis, your medical doctor and dentist can work together to come up with a treatment plan)
  • Deteriorating jaw bone
  • Overall unhealthiness

Even if you think you won’t be able to have one day dental implants, but you’re interested in them, a consultation never hurts! Our experts can work with you to let you know anything you can change to become a good candidate. Or, we may have other options to help you meet your dental goals.
